Interviews

One down, 3 to go (at least for the summer).

It really wasn’t bad at all - it took about half an hour, and I talked with an alum of the school (graduated last year) who now works in admissions. We talked about my research, she was very interested in student government, we talked about swimming and being bilingual and studying abroad. It really was a conversation more then an interview. I *think* it went well - she didn’t get any odd expressions, she wrote a lot down, I don’t think I started swearing uncontrolably or doing anything otherwise inadmissable.

However, it’s fairly moot because I didn’t click at all with the college. I wasn’t convinced with their arguments for a women’s college, all college life seems to be off campus, and the campus is absolutely tiny, and honestly a bit lonesome (very green and suberban, but I don’t want that).

We visited Tufts on our way back, which I surprisingly loved. The guy doing the information session was great, the atmosphere and personality were really vibrant, the research opportunities were absolutely available, and all the kids we saw (there were many more then at Wellesly) seemed really happy and active and like the sort of people I’d like to hang out with.

We’ll see. Unforutnatly my parents won’t pay for Tufts, so unless I magically get some of their non-existant merit aid or some monster scholarship from somewhere else, applying is a bit pointless. I still will though.

Your parents won’t pay for Tufts?
Seriously?  They’re that obsessed with not paying for a not-“top-tier” (pah!) college?  I know I’ve heard from your mom that she wouldn’t pay for like… Lehigh, but seriously?

Tufts?

The fuck?

Good luck, honey.  *hug*

Errr… yes, my parents are a bit insane. I’m essentially screwed if I don’t get into an Ivy.

Solution: attend an Ivy.  I hate to say it, but if you apply to all of them, you’re bound to get in somewhere. You are a smart cookie and kind and interesting creature; I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you were taken everywhere you plan to apply.

That said, if you don’t like an Ivy/ the Ivies in general, maybe not a good plan.

The computer has been named!

apodeitic:

Although “George” as suggested was duly considered, I’ve decided on “Baby.”

Short, simple, and it fits.

Reasoning:

  • It is a baby compared to my old one (younger and tinier and less functional)
  • It’s inaugural use was on infant cognition studies
  • It wants to be fed all the time (ie, it’s battery life isn’t too long)

but see here’s the thing.
computers can sleep for more than a half-hour at a stretch.

alice,

i’m going to hook you up with a thousand megaphones so the whole world can hear you laugh. it’s going to make everybody happier.

People should see, actually.  The way that you laugh so hard that there’s no sound anymore, just you making a silly face.  Once again, would make the world happier.

There is something incredibly endearing about this picture.
